Have you ever felt pain in your knees or any other joints? If you have, have you ever wondered what it was or what caused it? Well, some people may just think that the pain was caused by an overstretched muscle or a deep bruise and just take for granted that it will eventually go away. But little do they know that they might be experiencing the early stages of osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis is a joint disorder due to the loss of cartilage between the bones. The cartilage is a thin layer of protein substance located on the surface of the end of the bones that make joints. After a certain period of time, the build up of protein declines thus causing the cartilage to thin and then disappear. And when there is no cartilage, the bones experience more friction when they move. This is what causes the pain.

This joint disorder is common among the elderly, sometimes occurs in the middle-aged and average adults but rarely happens to children and youths. Aging is the most common reason for osteoarthritis. But in some cases, it may occur after doing too many vigorous exercises that exert pressure on the joints causing the cartilage to ware out faster. Whereas in some other cases, this joint disorder happens due to less exercise and movement of the joints which reduces the secretion of synovial fluid that lubricates the joints.

The effect of osteoarthritis on humans has been a problem to society. Today, researches have discovered many ways to handle this health problem. The most common kind of treatment is to take drugs. However, these drugs are mostly pain killers that do not actually cure the disease. Therefore, researches also recommend osteoarthritis patients to have nutritional supplements like glucosamine to help repair and maintain the cartilage. Besides that, physical therapy can also help tackle osteoarthritis. Doing the recommended kind of exercise is a way of getting the joints lubricated. Some doctors also encourage a proper diet because damaged joints, especially the knees, cannot support too much weight. As for serious osteoarthritis cases, surgeries may be required to replace a damaged joint.

Osteoarthritis is a progressive disorder that can worsen if it is not treated. The early stages may just cause pain in joints during movement but severe osteoarthritis may cause immobility or paralysis. Therefore, like other diseases, you should also be aware of osteoarthritis.
